Our Home – From A Blank Canvas To A Reflection Of Us!

When me and my husband built and bought this home it was a blank canvas. It was a little overwhelming trying to decorate and make our house look more like a loving and welcoming home. I am not great at home decorating, but its something I love to try and do. Thanks to Pinterest, I have a lot of help!

Today, as I sit and sip my coffee, I cant help but feel happy and blessed. Our home is finally coming together (two years later)! The bare walls are building with memories and themes that help warm our home and reflect who we are and what we love!

It has taken some wrong turns here and there… For instance my living room started like this…

3-10-14 0061

Then went to this…

3-17-14 0091

And we are finally arriving at this…

Still not finished yet but at least I have a color scheme going. Cream and white! I am in love! There are some family pictures I want to add. I love the photos that are transferred onto wood making them look old and rustic. Like so…

I also want to add some sheer curtains to the window. It all started with a new couch that ended up being cream and then it started coming together after that!

Next is our kitchen that is right off the living room. Being the first rooms in our home that you see we want to make a good impression. I don’t want the same colors in the kitchen as the living room. But I want them to flow. To do this I will add some of the cream color to the kitchen and use different colors there after.

What has been inspiring me lately is garage sales! My parents recently bought a house and the people that lived there were hoarders. The people they bought it from had a house, garage, and shed full of boxes upon boxes of craft items. My sister and I have been hosting garage sales to help get rid of the items and of course we get first pick… and second pick and any pick we want! I have rushed out to grab an item or two after inspiration hit.

Here are the items I have grabbed so far.

I stared at these for a long while… I was thinking I would repaint them but after I got them cleaned and up by my kitchen sign, I found they fit perfectly!

A perfect display if I say so myself! The wine rake we got at World Market on sale from around $35 for $18. And the sign my husband (all by himself) bought from Hobby Lobby. Perfecto!

I found these coffee cups that are a really good size! There is suppose to be metal arms that reach up and around the cups to keep them sturdy. Since I couldn’t find that piece my husband helped me create this instead.

I will paint it to match my “Kitchen” sign and write ‘Coffee’ at the top. Once I get it painted it will look like it belongs. For now it looks a little unfinished 🙁

Next were these bright colored jars! I love the pop of color it adds. I don’t know if these will always stay here, but for now, with my toddler and 16 month old, they are in the safest place possible.

And tada!

My kitchen is coming together! Again, so excited!

I found this little tray. I goes perfect with the coffee table we found at an antique shop in Spokane. I want to find some pretty wooden coasters to go in it.

I found this little bird cage. The shelf my husband just installed and its drying 😉 This is beside the t.v. and will hold the Wii and maybe a couple other small decorative things.

In the bird cage I will put either a small plant or perhaps some candles. I haven’t decided yet.

Last but not least I found this lantern.

Its a small little thing but cute and fits well with the rest of my display above my sliding glass door.

Just a few items that have made a big difference! And the best part, they were all free! The only thing we had to buy was glue for the coffee cup board the hooks to hold the coffee cups. Cheap and easy.

My yard is needs a lot of help but its still spring here in Washington an the weather is unpredictable. When we are ready to work outside its raining, when we are tired and in need of rest, the sun is shinning…

Our sons fifth birthday is coming up in about a month and a half so getting the yard together before then is a must! We have the time still so I’am trying not to worry about it.

I love having house parties and showing people what projects we have completed and new ideas we are working on. It happens at a slow pace but I am finding that is a good pace to work at. If I rush, I usually end up changing something, like my living room and all the colorful boxes we bought. I ended up putting the colored boxes in our office as I slowly replaced them with the cream colored ones. If I take it slow and let the ideas flow, it comes together making perfection!

Our Beautiful Home

This past week I have felt so blessed and filled with joy. My family is strong, true and being lead and blessed by God Himself. I have felt safe, loved and protected. In spite of everything that was seeming to fall apart around us, our home, stood strong.

I look at all the projects we got done this summer:

Danny’s swing set which has proved to be more loved and played on than we imagined.

My mailbox. Even though the mail service decided the day after I finished it that we would have to get our mail from the community boxes around the block, it is still beautiful and another reminder of a project accomplished. I think I will keep it up, you know, in case the mail service ever changes their mind…

We were able to do our kitchen back splash. The best part about the industry my husband works in is all the free tile and carpet that comes from left over jobs. All the tile we got was free and oh so beautiful. We had to wait a while before the glass tile became available, but it was worth it. My husband got it done over a weekend and it has added a finished look. Now I want to add blue plates, towels and such. But that will come in time. For now I am completely happy with having the back splash in.

It took me a while to start this project as I knew the time it would take to complete it. But it is done! It took me all summer to dig the grass out and place the boarder. To make it even harder on myself I added a section on the side of the house because I ended up planting a few bushes there. I need to hide the pipes and stains the sprinklers have made. It will take a few years for them to grow tall enough but when they come in they will be big and beautiful! This was my biggest project of the summer and I am ecstatic to have it done!

This was another project that wasn’t all that easy to complete. The stones were more on the expensive side so we purchased them a little at a time. I don’t need to tell you how heavy they are. Digging the hole and moving the stones back and forth (and back and forth and back and forth) to make sure they where steady was a long sweaty job! It was worth it though. It always is.

Now that all our projects are finished for this year I am beginning to think about next year. My first project will come in spring when gardening season roles around. I WILL have a garden next year! I have wanted one for years and due to all my projects this year it just didn’t happen. Next year, it is priority! Check out my Pinterest Gardening Board. I want a nice fence around it and a few raised beds along with a place for some raspberry bushes.

Along with a garden we desperately need to put a roof of some kind over our patio. The sun beats down on our backyard all summer so there is no enjoying the fresh air unless I want to sit in a pool of my own sweat. No thank you.

Next would be nice to extend our porch out. I want to lay brick to the left of my porch leading to the garden to create more of a sitting area. In that area I want to build a fire pit. Since this is such a big project I may have to do it in sections. Here are my Pinterest Patio Ideas. We want a slanted pergola with some kind of roof cover. I want the big bulb lights to hang underneath and I love the curtains that add style and shade. All are easy and quite possible. It only takes time and money right? Stay tuned to see what we come up with next year!

There is a lot I want to get done next year. Maybe to much? Whenever things look to be a little overwhelming I make a list. I am my mothers child. I have a list for just about everything! Below I placed the projects in order, most important to… less important 😉

1. Garden. (A must!)

2. Build a fence around the garden. (To keep curious children and any future pets out.)

2. Plant a dwarf apple tree by the garden. (Easy, and Dustin and I want an apple tree so bad!)

3. Brick under gate leading to backyard. (Easy, and I hate mowing lawn under the gate!)

4. Build roof/pergola over backyard patio. (Another must!)

5. Extend patio out with brick in the direction of the garden. (Another summer long project that may or may not happen.)

6. Plant a tree in front yard, boarder it and fill with rock. (I love trees! Specially dwarf trees placed in peoples front yard.)

That is what I have so far. As we move into the cooler weather I will start bringing work inside. I want to transform our master bed and bath. This project will take a while. I want mirrors above the nightstands. The nightstands themselves need to be repainted. I want a beautiful rug to be placed at the bottom of our bed but they can be expensive so I will be on the look out for a deal. Things like that.

If you know me, you know I am always working on a project and, working on creating new projects. I am a busy girl but I LOVE having something to do. I love creating and doing! I want to use the talents God has blessed me with to make our home a safe and wonderful place for our children and a place where family and friends can feel welcome.

My husband and I are rather exhausted from all the things we have just recently accomplished, namely the rock gardens, so I think we will take next month, October, as a rest and recoup month. It is just getting into the fall season and I want to enjoy every second of it! More afternoon walks, more preschool crafts tailored to decorating for fall/Halloween, more cooking of sweet pumpkin treats and trips to explore farms during their harvest up in Greenbluff.

Hoping you all a blessed season <3

So Much Going On!

I have so much to catch you up on! The weather was amazing last week! I was working on projects each and ever day! I will eventually catch you up on them and show you how I completed a bunch of Pinterest ideas, but for now I need to clean my house.

I was working all week outside so I didn’t get a single toilet scrubbed or a bathroom floor mopped. I only did the essentials like dishes and laundry with a few ten minute vacuuming sessions in between.

Do I feel ashamed?

Absolutely not!

My house is usually very clean and my outside projects, well I just couldn’t put them on the back burner! A house can always be cleaned but nice weather and children that cooperate are hard to come by.

Today I am doing some much needed Spring cleaning! I have been working on that a little this week. I went through the kids clothes, pulling the summer stuff out, I started a goodwill pile and a list of a few more summer clothes our two boys will be needing soon.

I have wiped down the window shades and washed all the windows, thank goodness I don’t have many. This isn’t just for spring but my son Danny’s fourth birthday is three weeks away! We didn’t get to have a party for him last year as his birthday was the day we moved in to our new house. I am trying to make up for that this year! It’s So hard to believe my husband and I have a four year old now! He is constantly reminding me how grown up he is. Like with this picture he drew all by himself!

unnamed (2)

Can you tell what it is? Its a chicken! He drew an apple and banana after that and each was so good you could make out the picture with no problem. We seem to have an artist on our hands! Got to love the doodle pad as well. I remember those things as I was a kid. They defiantly inspire creativity!

Well I am off to clean bathrooms and mop a few floors. I also need to clean out the fridge and oven, do some more laundry and go though all of my summer clothes. The day is filled with things to do and I couldn’t be happier! I love a good project even if it is cleaning.

To make it even more fun I turn up my music and lite a few of my wonderful smelling candles. Nothing makes you clean harder, faster and better than good music and sweet scents.

Happy Monday all! I will catch you up on my projects soon! I have some wonderful things to show you so stay tuned!!!

Our Front Door

I absolutely love front doors that are decorated with personalized signs so I decided to make one of my own! Its been a slow day and I felt the urge to go through my craft supplies.

I remembered that a very long time ago I bought supplies so make a personalized door sign with the first letter of our last name. I dug through my supplies and found everything I needed!

The idea came from this picture which I found on Pinterest.

48e7da57fca9c7843acb7d5b570855b9 (1)

Right now I have an Easter bunny hanging on our door and now that Easter is over, a new decoration is in order. I wanted to make something that could be hung for the seasons of spring and summer. I wanted to make it light and colorful. Something that makes me happy to look at! So I came up with this!

unnamed (1)

And here is how I did it!

First I spray painted my letter B.

Then I spray painted the corners of the picture frame I took a part. I only painted the corners as those are the only parts that will be showing. The frame was ivory to begin with so you don’t see much of a difference in this picture.

Next I cut strips of yellow fabric I had laying around.

This will be used to make these…

I love, love, LOVE these! Even though they are time consuming to make. And I always burn my fingers on the glue from the hot glue gun. But they are cute and easy to make!

First you start with your strip. Then you fold the material in half and hot glue the sides together. Not down the whole strip. Just at the beginning like so…

PicMonkey Collage1

Then you fold the beginning of the strip the other way and hot glue that! Like so…

PicMonkey Collage3

Keep in mind the measurements and the strips do not have to be perfect. I literally took my siccors and just hacked off the strips. I tried to keep them the same width but really didn’t worry to much. The length of the strips aren’t a big deal either because you can always add another strip to make a bigger flower if you want to. These cute little flowers are so forgiving! So don’t stress 😉

Next you begin rolling the material and hot gluing it along the way…

PicMonkey Collage4

It only takes a dot of hot glue to hold the material in place. You role the strip, glue, role, glue, role, glue, until you have the desired flower. Keep in mind the fatter the strips the more bulky the flower.

The flower on the top left was done with fatter strips of material. After I did that flower I realized I wanted flatter flowers so I cut my strips in half (length wise) and thus created the other four. It all depends on what you are going for!

After the paint on my frame dried I wrapped the blue and white yarn around it. I had other choices like in the supplies picture above but decided on the blue and white.

If you think those material flowers take time, my gosh! Wrapping the yarn around the frame took a while. I suggest putting on your favorite movie or something to do this part, and the part of the flowers, because it really takes some time. Its easy, just time consuming.

I also hot glued the beginning and end pieces of the yarn to the frame.

After I finished the frame I played around with where I wanted to place my yellow flowers. Once that was decided, I hot glued them on as well.

unnamed (2)

Then I added my B. This part was tricky. I don’t want it spinning around so I had to be mindful of where I placed the yarn on my letter.

unnamed (3)

And then after that was attached! Whalla!

unnamed (1)

Notice I added two other pieces of yarn to the left and right of my letter. It wouldn’t stop spinning!

I am so proud of my very first DIY door decoration! I can hardly wait to make more! There are several other ideas on Pinterest that I want to DIY as well.

Before I do that I need to get my hanging flower pots in place and some other kind of welcome sign that sits next to the door. Even with this pretty little decoration my front door is still a bit boring.

Like I said… I love a decorated front door 😉

My Kitchen Window

I have a very tall kitchen window. I love it! But with my kitchen cabinets so close on either side its difficult to put up a curtain without blocking my view.

unnamed (16)1

Then why put up a curtain you ask? In the summer afternoons the sun shines directly through it. If I’m standing there doing dishes, I am blinded, and if you are sitting in the living room trying to enjoy a movie, the sun is in your eyes. Very annoying!

My goal with this curtain is to block as little of the window as possible. I love looking into the backyard to see the kids playing or trying to imagine my next backyard project.

So where do you go to get ideas to be inspired?! Pinterest of course! Here are some of the ideas I pinned under My Kitchen Window.

I have always loved the phrase “You Are My Sunshine.” It reminds me of when I was a little girl sitting on my grandparents swing, singing that very song with my grandma and older sister. Such lovely, wonderful, warming memories. (Sigh). Behind the sign I would hang a blind.

But if I were to hang a blind I wouldn’t be able to have glass shelves…

Which I thought were pretty cool! I could put little flower pots on them and if I placed it high enough it wouldn’t be in my way.

I also liked the look of the burlap…

I think it would sufficiently block the sun and while doing so, I could still see out of it! The only issue is my kitchen is very modern. I wonder if the burlap would look out of place…

This idea is a great! I could find a really modern pattern and it would roll completely up and out of my way.

I could hang this behind the “You Are My Sunshine” sign or, I could hang it behind a curtain barrier such as this…

So as you can see I have to many ideas! Now that I have a collaboration I will show my husband, who will probably have a few good ideas of his own, and then I can come up with a plan of attack!

I love doing things on my own so if I can DIY it, I totally will 😉 This will be fun!

Once I know what I will be doing I’ll let you in on it. I hope to have it done soon as the sun is going to get brighter and stronger the more we get into summer. As usual, stay tuned!
